Summary: Kirk finds a lucky four-leaved Vulcan

"Found one." Kirk emerged triumphantly from the damp grass, clutching a tiny bit of foliage between his thumb and forefinger. He walked over to the bench where Spock was sitting and held his find up for inspection.

"I do not understand why your culture does not manipulate the clover leaf's genetics to consistently produce four leaves," said Spock as he scrutinized the plant in Kirk's hand, "if such specimens are prized so highly. Such an engineered cultivar might have considerable economic value at least as a novelty."

"Yes, but that would defeat the whole point of the four-leaf clover entirely," Kirk replied, sitting down next to him. In the lake, ducks splashed happily, and a leaf fell into the water and floated away. It was a perfect afternoon. "It's their rarity that makes us value them and consider them lucky. After all," he added, sidling closer to his lover on the bench, "I only have one of *you*--and you're very special to me. But I have no idea what I'd do with ten of you! That would definitely be too much for me."

"Then it is fortunate Vulcans, unlike bacteria or one-celled protozoans, do not reproduce via binary fission."
